How AI Computers Connect to the Grid

How does electricity reach an AI computer?

How it works

Data centers run games, videos and AI. AI programs learn patterns from examples. The grid brings electricity to buildings. Computers need power whenever they work.

Builders ask a utility (the power company) for a connection. Engineers check whether nearby wires can safely carry extra power. They check busy times when many buildings need power together.

Some sites need new wires or bigger equipment. A transformer (a voltage-changing device) prepares electricity for its next stage. Voltage (electrical push) moves current (flowing electrical charge) through wires. Equipment inside prepares power for computers. An interconnection queue (a waiting list for power connections) tracks studies and building work. Each part must be ready before computers use the connection.

A new site's demand affects the grid that nearby homes share.

Picture the scale

Think of power lines as roads: a huge new building needs more than a driveway. California lists the proposed San Jose Data Center at an estimated 77 MW, or 77 million watts. Its maximum would be 99 MW. The wires must handle the planned demand.

Why should I care?

Streaming a show needs computers somewhere. Their power connection needs checks on wires serving nearby homes and schools.

Words to know

Grid
Connected lines and equipment supplying electricity; like linked roads.
Transformer
Equipment that changes voltage; like changing the electrical push for a different job.

Check yourself

1. A new site needs more power than its line can carry. What should engineers examine?

  1. Line and equipment upgrades
  2. Only the computer software
  3. Only the cooling temperature
Show answer and why

A. Line and equipment upgrades. The electrical path must handle the added demand.

2. Which part changes voltage?

  1. Circuit breaker
  2. Transformer
  3. Cooling pump
Show answer and why

B. Transformer. A transformer changes the electrical push.

3. Why study nearby equipment?

  1. Every new site lowers all nearby demand
  2. Only the developer’s equipment can be affected
  3. The new demand affects the shared grid
Show answer and why

C. The new demand affects the shared grid. A new load uses equipment shared with other customers.
