Where Data Center Electricity Comes From
What is behind the electricity in your game?
How it works
Power lines link data centers to power sources. The grid (connected power lines and equipment) joins these sources to buildings. Many sources feed the same grid.
Wind turns turbines (machines with spinning blades). Solar panels (devices making electricity from sunlight) use the sun. Gas plants burn fuel for heat. Nuclear plants split atoms (tiny building blocks of matter) for heat. In many plants, spinning parts drive generators (machines turning movement into electricity).
Wind and sunshine change with weather and time. Gas plants need fuel while running. Batteries store energy for later. Grid workers match supply with users’ needs.
Contracts can support one source. Shared wires still link many plants and users. Both purchases and wires help explain how power reaches computers.
Picture the scale
EIA’s preliminary 2024 figures put natural gas at about 43% of U.S. electricity generation. Imagine dividing 100 equal energy blocks by source: about 43 came from gas. Other sources supplied the rest, like different ingredients filling one lunch tray.
Why should I care?
The electricity for streaming a show shares a grid with school air conditioning and home lights. Power sources and wires must work together when demand changes.
Words to know
- Grid
- A connected electrical supply system; like roads joining many places.
- Generator
- A machine converting movement into electricity; like the turning part of many power plants.
Check yourself
1. Which device uses sunlight directly to produce electricity?
- Solar panel
- Gas turbine
- Battery charged overnight
Show answer and why
A. Solar panel. Solar cells convert incoming light into electrical energy.
2. Why balance supply with demand?
- Electricity use stays identical all day
- Users need power as conditions change
- All sources produce a constant amount
Show answer and why
B. Users need power as conditions change. Both production and use vary over time.
3. What is a battery’s main job here?
- Making sunshine continue overnight
- Producing new energy without a supply
- Saving supplied energy for later
Show answer and why
C. Saving supplied energy for later. Storage shifts when energy is used.
