Transformers: Moving Electricity to Computers

Why change electricity’s voltage along its journey?

How it works

Transformers (devices that change voltage) prepare electricity for each stage. Voltage (electrical push) moves current (flowing electrical charge) through wires. Different parts of the grid use different voltages.

For the same power, higher voltage allows lower current. That reduces heat lost in long wires. Near buildings, transformers lower voltage for the next stage.

Inside, two wire coils (wire wound into loops) share a changing magnetic field (the area where magnetic forces act). The field carries energy between coils. The coils help set each side’s voltage.

Transformers must handle computer and cooling demand. Engineers check nearby wires and safety equipment too. Every part must fit its job. Transformers link large power lines to equipment inside buildings.

Picture the scale

OSHA describes transformers lowering electricity to 120/240 volts for homes. Think of a water-pressure regulator reducing pressure before water reaches a faucet. A transformer adjusts electrical push for the next job, though electricity and water work in different ways.

Why should I care?

Transformers help power reach your refrigerator, school lights and internet services. A new data center may need more equipment before its computers can turn on.

Words to know

Voltage
The electrical push; like the push making a flow move.
Current
The flow of electric charge; like traffic moving along a route.

Check yourself

1. What does a transformer change?

  1. Stored energy
  2. Fuel pressure
  3. Voltage
Show answer and why

C. Voltage. Transformers adjust the electrical push.

2. For the same power, what can higher voltage allow?

  1. Lower current
  2. A larger stored-energy amount
  3. A longer running time automatically
Show answer and why

A. Lower current. Voltage and current together relate to power.

3. Why match equipment to demand?

  1. Every transformer has unlimited capacity
  2. Equipment must handle its intended electrical job
  3. Only the building’s internet speed matters
Show answer and why

B. Equipment must handle its intended electrical job. The physical equipment must suit the load.
