Backup and On-Site Power for AI
What keeps a computer running when its supply stops?
How it works
Data centers need steady power. A short power cut can stop computer tasks. Several kinds of equipment help keep power flowing.
A battery stores energy for later. It supplies power while other equipment starts. A generator (a machine turning movement into electricity) provides another power source. Many backup generators burn fuel to turn engines.
On-site power (electricity made where it is used) can run often or wait for emergencies. Wires and switches carry power to computers.
Batteries run down. Generators need fuel and care. Each layer helps with different problems. Running generators still need working wires and switches. A failed part can keep power from reaching computers.
Picture the scale
The national laboratory's battery cost study includes a 60-MW battery lasting four hours at that output. That means 240 MWh before allowing for losses. Like a rechargeable flashlight, stored energy eventually runs out; a bigger power output uses it faster.
Why should I care?
During a home power outage, your phone may still reach online services. Their data centers may have backup power. Nearby generators can bring noise and exhaust to your neighborhood.
Words to know
- Battery
- Equipment storing energy for later; like a rechargeable flashlight.
- Generator
- Equipment turning movement into electricity; like the generating part of a power plant.
Check yourself
1. A battery has a fixed energy store. Using power twice as fast does what?
- Keeps the same running time
- Shortens its running time
- Doubles its stored energy
Show answer and why
B. Shortens its running time. The same amount runs out sooner at a higher rate.
2. What does on-site describe?
- A guarantee of uninterrupted power
- How long a battery runs
- Where power is made
Show answer and why
C. Where power is made. On-site names a location.
3. A generator runs but a switch fails. Why can computers still lose power?
- The whole electrical path must work
- Fuel bypasses the wires
- Running generators repair switches
Show answer and why
A. The whole electrical path must work. Power needs a complete route to the equipment.
