DayOne and Sembcorp explore data-center power

Published

A study across selected projects

DayOne Data Centers and Sembcorp Utilities signed a memorandum of understanding on October 29 to examine energy solutions for selected data-center developments in Asia. DayOne says Sembcorp would be a technical partner, helping assess power needs for projects the companies have yet to name.

The proposed work spans on-site generation, renewable electricity, fuel and storage, electrical infrastructure, and operations and maintenance. The firms say they will evaluate feasibility and business cases. Their announcement sets no project-specific capacity, investment, delivery date or electricity contract.

Why plan energy with the building

Data centers need steady electricity for computing and cooling. Considering power sources and electrical equipment early can let developers compare grid supply, on-site generation, fuel arrangements and renewables before they settle a site's design. Analogy: it is like planning the roads and utilities before a new district is built, rather than trying to add them after it opens.

That is the approach the companies say they want to explore—not an operating system or a measured reduction in delays. They report no grid-service change, project cost or performance result from this memorandum.

Earlier agreements are separate

DayOne says an existing power-purchase agreement with Sembcorp will cover operations at its upcoming SG1 data center in Singapore with renewable energy. It also cites separate 2026 renewable-energy supply agreements in Malaysia covering about 1.5 gigawatts-peak of solar capacity and 2.2 gigawatt-hours of battery storage, plus a separate power agreement for its Chonburi campus in Thailand. Those are prior initiatives, not announced deliverables under this new memorandum.

What would make the MOU concrete

For AI operators, coordinating power with data-center construction could matter in markets where electricity supply is difficult to secure. The companies offer that as a goal; they have not named a participating site or shown a working arrangement. No community-level rate or emissions effect is described for the new study.

The next useful details would be named projects, the power sources and capacities under consideration, commercial terms, and a schedule. Until then, the agreement is a planning step rather than a new source of delivered electricity.
