A sixth Equinix site opens in Singapore

Equinix announced the opening of SG6 on November 6. It is the company’s sixth International Business Exchange data center in Singapore and its first facility built under the government’s Data Centre–Call for Application process.

The company says its initial investment is about US$290 million. Phase 1 provides approximately 1,550 cabinets and 8 megawatts of capacity; full build-out is designed for up to 20 MW of IT capacity. Equinix labels only the 20 MW figure as IT capacity, so the two measures should not be treated as interchangeable. SG6 is open, but the release names no customer deployments or amount of computing equipment currently installed.

Equinix says SG6 is designed for AI and data-intensive workloads. Its systems include liquid cooling for dense GPU equipment, rooftop and facade solar panels, rainwater collection, and the use of NEWater in cooling towers.

A liquid loop carries heat away

AI servers turn electricity into both computation and heat. Direct liquid cooling moves heat from equipment into a circulating water loop rather than first relying on room air. The U.S. Department of Energy describes a typical arrangement in which a coolant distribution unit transfers that heat to another loop for removal from the building.

Analogy: it works like plumbing that picks up heat near the appliance and carries it to a place where the heat can be released. That description explains the mechanism, not SG6’s measured cooling performance.

Design targets still need operating data

Equinix says SG6 is designed for a power usage effectiveness, or PUE, of 1.20. PUE compares all facility energy with the energy used by IT equipment; 1.0 is the theoretical minimum because it would leave no energy for cooling or other building systems. The 1.20 figure is a design target, not a published result after opening.

Rainwater harvesting and NEWater may reduce reliance on drinking-quality water for cooling, but the announcement gives no measured consumption. It also provides no post-opening electricity data, customer mix, or evidence of an effect on household utility bills.

What the next milestones can show

Equinix and the National University of Singapore are targeting a co-innovation facility at SG6 for 2027 to test ideas including liquid cooling and battery storage. Future operating measurements and customer deployments will show how much of the planned AI capacity is used and how the facility performs in practice.
