Liquid cooling reaches Kioxia’s enterprise SSDs
What happened
Kioxia announced E3.S enterprise SSD models designed for direct liquid cooling. The CM9-DLC drives also support conventional air-cooled environments.
What changes for server designers
The drives support cold-plate-enabled servers, PCIe 5.0 and dual-port connections. Kioxia lists capacities up to 30.72 TB for read-intensive models and 25.6 TB for mixed-use models.
Those options carry endurance ratings of one and three drive writes per day respectively. The company identifies SSD context caching as an intended use; these are storage devices, not replacement AI processors.
Samples have limits
Kioxia says selected customers are receiving samples for functional checks and warns that specifications may change before mass production. The release does not quantify facility-wide energy savings or announce a general availability date. Cooling support alone cannot establish the savings a particular server installation will achieve.
Why it matters
Dense servers require thermal planning beyond their main processors. Storage compatibility is another piece of that design.
