Microsoft’s Hyderabad cloud region is live—but service rollout continues

What happened

Microsoft says its India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad is now operating, with three availability zones. The September 21 announcement places it within the company’s $20.5 billion India commitment; that figure is not a price tag for this region alone.

What customers can use now

The company says customers including HDFC Bank and Adani Group have signed up. More Azure and AI capabilities, including Microsoft Foundry, are planned over coming months. A region being live therefore does not mean every advertised service is already available there. Customers remain responsible for checking their own regulatory and workload requirements.

Why three zones matter

Microsoft’s separate availability-zone documentation explains the engineering: zones group physically separate data centers with independent electricity, cooling and networking. Spreading a workload across zones can keep it running when one zone fails. It does not protect against an outage affecting the entire region.

The deployment choice matters. Some services distribute resources across zones automatically; others require configuration. A resource placed in just one zone does not automatically gain protection against that zone failing. For example, putting all application instances in the same zone leaves them exposed to a shared disruption even inside a three-zone region. Buyers should check the actual service configuration, replication and failover behavior, rather than assuming the region’s architecture guarantees their application stays online.

Cooling and connectivity have different milestones

Microsoft describes mechanical cooling that uses effectively no water for cooling. That claim is narrower than zero water use across the facility or its electricity supply.

Separately, Microsoft is a consortium partner in the planned 3,600-kilometer I-2SEA cable connecting India, Malaysia and Singapore, targeted for service in 2029. The cloud region is live; that cable remains a future connection.
